BURMA

At this crucial time for Burma, we need to make sure the steps towards freedom continue.

We’ve seen some positive signs of change recently in Burma. But there is still a long way to go. We may be seeing a change of atmosphere, but not yet a change of system. There is room for cautious optimism – but much more work to do.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from more than fifteen years of house arrest. Hundreds of other political prisoners have been freed. Ceasefires have been declared in many of the armed conflicts between the Burma Army and the ethnic minorities.

This oppressed nation could at last be on the brink of real transformation.

Yet the changes have not yet had any real impact on the day-to-day lives of the people of Burma.

There’s still a long way to go – and your voice can make a difference.

Step up your prayers and campaigning now, and we could see real, lasting freedom for the people of Burma!

Aung San Suu KyiIt’s all in a name: Burma or Myanmar?

Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to Europe put Burma in the spotlight. As her country begins to take some fragile, baby steps towards reform, she travelled to Geneva, Oslo, Dublin, London, Oxford and Paris to seek the help of the international community.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to the UK last week was historic. CSW was privileged to be closely involved. But as CSW’s East Asia Team Leader Benedict Rogers writes, the message from her visit is clear: now is not a time for euphoria.

"I feel it is important to lend my support to CSW's campaign, CRY FREEDOM...We would all like to see an end to the unnecessary suffering in places like Burma and North Korea and it is important that organisations like CSW get the support they need to end crimes against humanity and secure freedom around the world."  Rt. Hon John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons.
