Stop the repression in Eritrea!
The European Commission’s recent decision to award €120 million of development aid, without any link to clear improvements in human rights, is a serious setback for those living in one of the world’s most oppressive regimes.

With 75% of the population malnourished, around 3,000 Christians imprisoned in appalling conditions and thousands of others similarly detained, the people of Eritrea are in desperate need of help. But, the Commission’s recent release of funding – with no link to human rights improvements – merely provides a lifeline for the Eritrean leadership and will not reach those most in need of help. We believe that human rights should be a vital part of the European Union’s dialogue with Eritrea, and that any funding needs a clear link to human rights to ensure greatest benefit to all from the grant. Join CSW’s focus on Eritrea this summer and urge the European Union to keep up pressure on the human rights situation in Eritrea. Sign your name today! To: The EU PresidencyWe would like to express our concern at the recent decision by the European Union (EU) to unconditionally release development funding to the government of Eritrea. We therefore urge the EU Presidency to ensure that the human rights crisis in Eritrea is placed firmly on the European agenda, and that it features prominently in dialogues with the Eritrean Government. We also ask you to ensure that strict mechanisms are put in place to monitor the use of all aid, and that future assistance is linked to discernable improvements in Eritrea’s human rights climate.
