Robert Park released from North Korea

Thank you so much for praying for Robert Park, the Christian missionary who went into North Korea on Christmas Day and has just been released from detention. We thank God for his safety and that he is recovering with his family. Robert’s aim was to raise awareness of the human rights abuses in North Korea, and you can help achieve this by lobbying your MEP today.

According to international news reports 28-year-old Robert Park was welcomed home looking pale and thin by his family at Los Angeles International Airport.  He has been quoted as explaining that his understanding of North Korea had been tarnished by "false propaganda made by the west.” He was detained for a total of 43 days before being released.

Calling for freedom and justice

CSW believes that crimes against humanity are being committed in North Korea. Please email your MEP today, asking them to raise the issues with the government and appropriate EU representatives, urging them to work to establish a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate crimes against humanity in North Korea. The more of us who join together, the greater the impact. Together we will raise our voices to call for freedom!

Background

Mr Robert Park entered North Korea on Christmas Day, taking with him a message of Christian love and goodwill to the brutal regime. He also wanted to highlight the terrible conditions in prison camps in North Korea, and to ask the regime to close down all these camps and release the prisoners.

The Christian missionary, originally from Tucson, Arizona, crossed illegally into North Korea from China on Christmas Day with a letter addressed to the North Korean leadership in which he appealed for an end to the country’s notorious prison camps.

He wrote...

“Please open your borders so that we may bring food, provisions, medicine, necessities, and assistance to those who are struggling to survive.  Please close down all concentration camps and release all political prisoners today, and allow care teams to enter to minister healing to those who have been tortured and traumatized. All we are asking is for all North Koreans to be free, safe and have life. With love, respect, and good will towards all people.”

Human rights in North Korea remain among the worst in the world. There is no freedom of religion and Christians are often tortured, imprisoned and murdered. Deviation from state doctrine is met with ruthless and devastating punishment. Around 200,000 are believed to be held in prison camps with no hope of release.

Pray

- Pray for Robert Park, and for his complete restoration. We know that he was put under tremendous pressure, so please pray for his healing and recovery.

- Pray for the 200,000 prisoners in North Korea’s gulag, for God to sustain them, for their release and for the closure of the prison camps.

- Pray that world leaders would have perseverance, wisdom and integrity as they attempt to bring change to North Korea, and that the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea (DPRK) government would listen and respond to the cries of its people.
