Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi

30 Oct 2011

You may remember Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi speaking at a previous CSW conference. This week, please pray for him, and remember other church leaders in Jos at this difficult time.

As Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Jos, he is one of the leading Christian voices speaking truth and calling for peace between faiths in the midst of attacks by militant Islamists that over the years have killed tens of thousands in northern and central Nigeria, made hundreds of thousands homeless and destroyed hundreds of churches. He and his wife have narrowly escaped death on several occasions. After his house was burnt down, he placed a small glass coffin containing some of the ashes on display in his living room "to remind me I am living on extra time".

Archbishop Ben has been an outspoken critic of biased international reporting of sectarian violence in Plateau State. He demands that the truth be told without the presumption that both sides are equally to blame, and asks us to listen to voices of Nigerian Christians.

This week, please pray for:

  • The miracle of non-retaliation in the cycle of violence in parts of northern Nigeria;
  • For the safety of Archbishop Ben, his family and other Christian leaders;
  • That Christians in northern and central Nigeria will be protected from attacks;
  • For an end to attacks by the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram;
  • For the perpetrators and organisers of violence to be brought to justice.

"It is in looking up that we totally surrender and leave vengeance, judgement and justice to God. If we look down, we shall only find revenge, bitterness, anger, pain and an unending cycle of destruction." Archbishop Kwashi
