Cuba has seen a massive deterioration in religious freedom this year and Christians there suffer heavy-handed persecution on a daily basis.

Lord, we pray for the nation of Cuba during this time of uncertainty and economic and political transition. Please work in the hearts of the government to bring about a future that includes peace, democracy and respect for religious freedom.

This week, please:

• Give thanks for the tremendous growth in all church denominations and for the impact the Church is having in reaching out to the marginalised.
• Praise God that the Church is a vessel to bring His hope to the country. Ask God to give its leaders wisdom and courage to stand for His values.
• Lift up Fidel and Raul Castro and their families. Pray for other powerful government ministers and ask God to change their hearts so that they will work for a peaceful transition to democracy while protecting the rights of their population.
• Pray for the young people of Cuba, many of whom have little hope for their future and are turning to alcohol, drugs and other destructive behaviour.
• Pray for Christians who have been targeted because of their faith and actions rooted in their faith. Ask God to protect and encourage them and to provide all they need.
• Pray a special blessing over the children of the persecuted who are often targeted as a way of pressuring their parents.
