Christians and other religious minorities in Nepal have started to experience the effects of the new constitution, which contains clauses restricting religious freedom. Structured a bit like Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, these clauses can be used to punish people for sharing their faith.

Today, please thank God for the positive outcome in the trial of eight Christians in Charikot who had been charged with attempting to convert children to Christianity.

During our recent visit we met Pastor Tanka and other human rights defenders in Kathmandu, who supported the eight Christians during their trial. Pastor Tanka is still working for religious freedom in Nepal, so please pray for God to provide for him today.

We also met Prakash, a young activist who is working for religious freedom in Nepal. Please pray for perseverance and protection for him and his colleagues.

Christians aren’t the only religious minority under threat in Nepal. Please pray for Buddhists and Muslims in Nepal who are also facing increasing pressure.

With its new laws that clamp down on religious freedom, Nepal is a very strong example of how restrictive legislation can affect the lives of ordinary people. Please pray that these regulations would be changed soon.

Last year CSW held a training session in Nepal for journalists and activists, showing them how to document human rights abuses thoroughly so they can be presented as legal evidence. Today, let’s thank God for this opportunity and pray that we see fruit from this session!

Father God, today we bring the country of Nepal to you. We pray that its restrictive laws will be changed soon, and that one day, Nepal would be a country where everyone can talk about their faith openly and in peace. Amen.
