{"id":31718,"date":"2014-09-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-01T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/magazines\/on-the-front-lines-burma-2059\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T21:21:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T20:21:02","slug":"on-the-front-lines-burma-2059","status":"publish","type":"magazines","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/magazines\/on-the-front-lines-burma-2059\/","title":{"rendered":"On the front lines: Burma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><i>Recently returned from a visit to Burma, our East Asia Team Leader Benedict Rogers explains his hopes and fears for a nation at a pivotal moment in its history.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was in Burma for Easter, and was struck by just how relevant the Easter story is for this country. The Catholic Archbishop of Rangoon said that for the people of Burma \u201cresurrection is not just a dogma or an act of faith. We went through our way of the Cross&#8230;A cross where the five nails of dictatorship, war, displacement, poverty and oppression were brutally inflicted.\u201d However, he continues: \u201cBut there are streaks of hope in this nation today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past three years, some extraordinary changes have occurred. Many political prisoners have been released, ceasefires have been established, and Burma\u2019s democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues from her party now sit in parliament rather than in prison. But there is still a very long way to go. Everyone I spoke to said that the reform process has \u201cstalled\u201d, and a dramatic rise in religious intolerance is casting a dark shadow over the nation.
