{"id":31961,"date":"2023-10-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/magazines\/around-the-world-6093\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T21:21:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T20:21:54","slug":"around-the-world-6093","status":"publish","type":"magazines","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/magazines\/around-the-world-6093\/","title":{"rendered":"Alrededor del mundo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/b6de17e323d11f63896b7648dee85446.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>China<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three leaders of a house church in China\u2019s northern Shanxi Province have been formally charged with forming a criminal \u2018clique\u2019 and obtaining \u2018illegal income\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preachers Li Jie and Han Xiaodong have been detained since August 2022, when their church was raided by more than 100 police officers, and their colleague Wang Qiang was detained in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They join a growing number of religious leaders prosecuted on unjust \u2018fraud\u2019 charges in recent years, which could carry a sentence of more than 10 years. These charges often target unregistered churches for receiving tithes and offerings. However, some churches have legitimate reasons for not wanting to register with the authorities, while others have been blocked from registering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Nigeria<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usman Buda, a devout market trader in Nigeria\u2019s Sokoto State, was beaten to death by a mob after he was accused of committing blasphemy during an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Buda\u2019s friends rejected the allegation, with one market seller commenting: \u2018I know Usman liked arguments on religious issues, but I didn\u2019t hear him even for once using derogatory remarks against the Prophet [Mohammed]\u2019s companions.\u2019 He added that the false accusation was made by Mr Buda\u2019s business competitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His murder came a little over a year after the lynching of Christian student Deborah Emmanuel following an unsubstantiated blasphemy accusation. It provides a fresh reminder of how blasphemy laws contribute towards fostering religious extremism, and blasphemy-related impunity emboldens extremists to launch deadly violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Vietnam<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protestant Pastor Nguyen Trung Ton has reportedly been denied medical treatment in Gia Trung Prison in Vietnam.
