{"id":28677,"date":"2016-07-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-10T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/14-church-members-charged-with-obstructing-police-3169\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:41:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:41:07","slug":"14-church-members-charged-with-obstructing-police-3169","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/14-church-members-charged-with-obstructing-police-3169\/","title":{"rendered":"14 church members charged with obstructing police"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0123090662d26cc566187f8c9d8ae072.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has learned that 14 members and leaders of the Khartoum Bahri Evangelical Church who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2016\/07\/11\/presionar\/3165\/article.htm\/\">arrested for demonstrating against the seizure of the church\u2019s training school<\/a> on 7 July were convicted at the Khartoum Bahri criminal court on 10 July.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person was convicted of \u201cobstructing the police\u201d and \u201cbreaching the public peace\u201d and ordered to pay a fine of 500 Sudanese Pounds around US$82). The rest of the group was convicted of \u201cobstructing the police\u201d and ordered to pay a fine of 300 Sudanese Pounds (around US$49) each. The group was released immediately following the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW reported on the arrests in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2016\/07\/11\/presionar\/3165\/article.htm\/\">press release<\/a> issued earlier today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on the update, Dr Khataza Gondwe, CSW\u2019s Africa and Middle East Team Leader said <i><b>\u201cWe are deeply concerned by these convictions, which amount to official restrictions on the right to peaceful assembly, as articulated in article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Sudan is party.
