{"id":28933,"date":"2018-07-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-08T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/iranian-christian-released-from-prison-after-charges-dropped-4033\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:46:51","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:46:51","slug":"iranian-christian-released-from-prison-after-charges-dropped-4033","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/iranian-christian-released-from-prison-after-charges-dropped-4033\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian Christian released from prison after charges dropped"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/22402b3cfca249f6eaa9b605b93d6556.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW has learned that Mohammadali Yassaghi, an Iranian Christian also known as Estifan, was released from prison on 25 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW has learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2018\/06\/05\/presionar\/4002\/article.htm\/\">Mohammadali Yassaghi<\/a>, an Iranian Christian also known as \u2018Estifan\u2019, was released from prison on 25 June following a hearing at the 102nd branch of the Revolutionary Court in Babolsar, in which the presiding judge dismissed the charges against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Yassaghi was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2018\/06\/05\/presionar\/4002\/article.htm\/\">arrested<\/a> on 10 April 2018. The 52 year-old father of three was accused of \u2018spreading propaganda against the establishment\u2019 and was later transported to Babol prison in Mazandaran Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of the Church of Iran denomination, Mr Yassaghi converted to Christianity over 20 years ago. His arrest was part of an ongoing official campaign targeting the Christian community through intimidation, spurious arrests and charges, and excessive sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cWhile we welcome Mr Yassaghi\u2019s release, we reiterate our belief that he should never have been arrested in the first place. We are extremely concerned by the ongoing repression of minority religious communities in Iran.
