{"id":29219,"date":"2020-06-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-28T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/csw-welcomes-un-experts-call-for-action-4704\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T21:51:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T20:51:45","slug":"csw-welcomes-un-experts-call-for-action-4704","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/csw-welcomes-un-experts-call-for-action-4704\/","title":{"rendered":"CSW welcomes UN experts&#8217; call for action"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/eeaf3f58ae97231bb64bc431230d01f7.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW has welcomed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=26006\">joint statement<\/a> signed by 50 United Nations (UN) Independent Experts calling on the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) to take urgent action to monitor human rights violations in China.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=26006\">statement<\/a>, issued on 26 June, the experts claim \u201cit is time for renewed attention on the human rights situation in the country, particularly in light of the moves against the people of the Hong Kong SAR, minorities of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, the Tibet Autonomous Region, and human rights defenders across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts suggest several measures which could be taken by the HRC, including holding a special session to evaluate human rights violations, and creating an impartial and independent United Nations mechanism to closely monitor, analyse and report annually on the human rights situation in China. The experts also urge all <span style=\"color:black; background: white\">UN Member States and UN agencies to demand in their dialogues and exchanges with China that China fulfils its human rights obligations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cInternational action on China\u2019s human rights crisis is long overdue. As such, we welcome this statement from a group of UN experts and fully support their recommendations for increased scrutiny of ongoing violations of human rights in the country, which are among the most egregious in the world today. For too long China has used its substantial economic and geopolitical influence to bully UN Member States into silence; this must be overcome with concerted and coordinated international action, for the sake of all those experiencing human rights violations in China.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2020-china-report\/\">latest report<\/a> on China, entitled \u2018Repressed, Removed, Re-Educated: The stranglehold on religious life in China,\u2019 finds that the level of freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in China is rapidly and significantly decreasing, amid a broader pattern of increasing human rights abuses under Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In China\u2019s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) for example, between one and three million predominantly Muslim Uyghurs, Kazakhs and members of other ethnic minorities are believed to have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2018\/10\/16\/report\/4122\/article.htm\/\">detained without charge<\/a> in so-called \u2018political re-education camps.\u2019 Outside of the XUAR, religion or belief communities across the country, as well as activists and human rights lawyers who defend the right to FoRB, face a wide range of violations and abuses.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CSW has welcomed a joint statement signed by 50 United Nations Independent Experts calling on the UN HRC to take urgent action to monitor human rights violations in China.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":22600,"template":"","categories":[],"regions":[131,128],"class_list":["post-29219","press","type-press","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","regions-china","regions-east-asia"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/press\/29219","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/press"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/press"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/press\/29219\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":39803,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/press\/29219\/revisions\/39803"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/22600"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=29219"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=29219"},{"taxonomy":"regions","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/regions?post=29219"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
