{"id":29473,"date":"2021-09-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/two-pastors-fined-for-participating-in-nationwide-protests-5388\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:03:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:03:54","slug":"two-pastors-fined-for-participating-in-nationwide-protests-5388","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/two-pastors-fined-for-participating-in-nationwide-protests-5388\/","title":{"rendered":"Two pastors fined for participating in nationwide protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1d7b24ae8c70bf45e3f425a842dfd54d.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Two Cuban pastors who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/07\/12\/presionar\/5345\/article.htm\/\">detained<\/a> amid unprecedented nationwide protests in Cuba on 11 July were informed on 1 September that the government would be fining them for participating in the protests, but that they would not face prison sentences.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After their arrest on 11 July, Pastors Y\u00e9remi Blanco Ram\u00edrez and Yarian Sierra Madrigal spent nearly two weeks detained incommunicado before being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/07\/26\/presionar\/5358\/article.htm\/\">released<\/a> into house arrest on 24 July. While he was detained, the family of Pastor Sierra Madrigal was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/07\/19\/presionar\/5354\/article.htm\/\">evicted from its home<\/a> after their landlord faced pressure to do so from Cuban State Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere, Protestant pastor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/08\/03\/presionar\/5363\/article.htm\/\">Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo<\/a>, who was also arrested on 11 July, has now been in detention for over seven weeks. On 9 August, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/08\/09\/presionar\/5367\/article.htm\/\">transferred<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mapio.net\/pic\/p-63341654\/\">Boniato Maximum Security Prison<\/a> outside the city of Santiago de Cuba, and his most recent appeal was denied by the Cuban authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Head of Advocacy Anna-Lee Stangl said: <b><i>\u201cWhile we welcome the fact that Pastors Blanco Ram\u00edrez and Sierra Madrigal have not been handed prison sentences, we maintain that they never should have been imprisoned or accused of anything in the first place. We are also deeply concerned at the continued and unjust detention of Pastor Rosales Fajardo.
