{"id":29540,"date":"2021-12-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/uk-tribunal-finds-chinese-state-responsible-for-genocide-in-uyghur-region-5503\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:05:23","slug":"uk-tribunal-finds-chinese-state-responsible-for-genocide-in-uyghur-region-5503","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/uk-tribunal-finds-chinese-state-responsible-for-genocide-in-uyghur-region-5503\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Tribunal finds Chinese State responsible for genocide in Uyghur region"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/80e4f50a811709b21e877f6bd77d9533.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The UK Tribunal to Investigate Chinas Alleged Genocide and Crimes against Humanity against Uyghur, Kazakh and other Turkic Muslim Populations published its final judgement on 9 December.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It concluded that the Chinese state is responsible for genocide, torture and crimes against humanity against Uyghur, Kazakh and other ethnic minority citizens in the Uyghur region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/uyghurtribunal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/UT-judgment-version-for-approval-by-GN-07.25-2.pdf\">judgement<\/a>, the Tribunal finds that torture of Uyghurs and crimes against humanity attributable to the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) \u201cis established beyond reasonable doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tribunal also concludes that, while there is no evidence of mass killing of Uyghurs, it \u201cis satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the PRC, by the imposition of measures to prevent births intended to destroy a significant part of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang as such, has committed genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Uyghur Tribunal (\u201cTribunal\u201d) is a people\u2019s tribunal that was launched on 3 September 2020 with assistance from a non-governmental organisation, the Coalition for Genocide Response, after Dolkun Isa, President of the World Uyghur Congress had formally requested in June 2020 that Sir Geoffrey Nice QC should establish and chair an independent people\u2019s tribunal to investigate \u201congoing atrocities and possible Genocide\u201d against the Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Turkic Muslim Populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three rounds of hearings were held from 4-7 June, 10-13 September and on 27 November 2021, during which witnesses and experts gave evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cCSW hopes that this important judgement will bring further and urgent international attention to the ongoing human rights crisis in the Uyghur region. While this determination is of clear importance, as the judgement notes, the Tribunal has no power to sanction the PRC, and therefore \u2018assumes politicians, civil society, NGOs and powerful individuals who may have some powers of sanction and who can make their voices heard \u2026 will do so\u2019. CSW calls again for further action from the United Nations, and democratic governments, to hold to account those responsible for these violations. The world must not stand by and allow these grave crimes to go unanswered.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delivery of the Tribunal\u2019s judgement comes days after the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/12\/07\/presionar\/5502\/article.htm\/\">announced<\/a> a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, on account of widespread human rights violations perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
