{"id":29596,"date":"2022-03-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/csw-calls-for-increased-protections-for-shia-community-after-suicide-bomb-5607\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:06:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:06:41","slug":"csw-calls-for-increased-protections-for-shia-community-after-suicide-bomb-5607","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/csw-calls-for-increased-protections-for-shia-community-after-suicide-bomb-5607\/","title":{"rendered":"CSW calls for increased protections for Shia community after suicide bomb attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/30d16723746d10c9ec65ccc118e0a114.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW is calling on the government of Pakistan to increase protections for the country\u2019s Shia Muslim community after at least 63 people were killed and nearly 200 were injured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/4\/at-least-30-killed-as-mosque-bombed-in-northwest\">suicide bomb attack<\/a> on a Shia mosque in Kocha Risaldar, Peshawar, Pakistan, on 4 March during Friday prayers.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack has since been claimed by an Islamic State (IS) affiliate group headquartered in neighbouring Afghanistan. While it was initially reported that there were two attackers, an IS statement claims that a lone attacker opened fire on police outside the mosque before proceeding to enter the building and detonate a suicide bomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Imran Khan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PakPMO\/status\/1499688996737372162\">tweeted<\/a> a condemnation of the attack, and the government has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/islamic-state-group-afghanistan-religion-taliban-peshawar-0e21d148ab4ab25e177f9d53f1ccff23?utm_medium=AP&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow&#038;utm_source=Twitter\">vowed<\/a> to hunt down and arrest those who orchestrated it. However, this is not the first time Pakistan\u2019s Shia community has been attacked in recent years, and CSW is concerned that extremist elements within the country have been emboldened to act by government rhetoric which has promoted and granted space to such attitudes, to the detriment of the lives and safety of sectarian and religious minorities in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cAs the death toll from last week\u2019s horrific suicide attack in Kocha Risaldar continues to rise, CSW extends our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, and we hope and pray for a full recovery for those still fighting for their lives.
