{"id":29618,"date":"2022-05-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/cuban-government-informs-pastor-lorenzos-family-of-reduced-seven-year-5691\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:07:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:07:13","slug":"cuban-government-informs-pastor-lorenzos-family-of-reduced-seven-year-5691","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/cuban-government-informs-pastor-lorenzos-family-of-reduced-seven-year-5691\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban government informs Pastor Lorenzo&#8217;s family of reduced seven-year sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/b677cc82db8c875ff7defaf04e5b511c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The Cuban government has officially informed the family of imprisoned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/10\/27\/report\/5462\/article.htm\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Protestant Pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo<\/a> that he has been sentenced to seven years in prison.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sentence is one year shorter than the eight-year sentence that was initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2022\/04\/07\/presionar\/5673\/article.htm\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">communicated<\/a> in a document sent from the Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva to the United Nations (UN). No reason has been given for the change to the pastor\u2019s sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Rosales Fajardo was\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2021\/8\/3\/presionar\/5363\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested<\/a>\u202fafter participating in peaceful protests that took place across the island on 11 July 2021.\u202fHe has been imprisoned in Boniato Maximum Security Prison since August 2021, and was tried on charges of\u202f\u2018disrespect\u2019, \u2018assault\u2019, \u2018criminal incitement\u2019 and \u2018public disorder\u2019 on 20 and 21 December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the pastor\u2019s sentence was reportedly decided soon after his trial, he and his family only <a href=\"https:\/\/forbinfull.org\/2022\/04\/12\/eight-years-in-prison-for-pastor-lorenzo-rosales-fajardo-communicated-to-his-family-as-an-afterthought\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">learned<\/a> of his initial eight-year prison sentence in April via the Cuban government\u2019s communication to the UN, which acknowledged that the \u2018parties\u2019 had yet to be officially informed, and made multiple false allegations regarding the reasons for which the pastor was detained, and the conditions under which he has been held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Head of Advocacy and Americas Team Leader\u202fAnna Lee Stangl\u202fsaid:\u202f<b><i>\u201cWhile we welcome this slight reduction to Pastor Rosales Fajardo\u2019s prison sentence, we maintain that he is innocent of the charges against him, and therefore that he should be a free man.
