{"id":29840,"date":"2024-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/bjp-fails-to-secure-outright-parliamentary-majority-6242\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:11:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:11:23","slug":"bjp-fails-to-secure-outright-parliamentary-majority-6242","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/bjp-fails-to-secure-outright-parliamentary-majority-6242\/","title":{"rendered":"BJP fails to secure outright parliamentary majority"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9ef34fa008b7c2d2951ea1c43ea81f5c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>India\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power in the country since 2014, failed to secure an outright parliamentary majority in the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/forbinfull.org\/2024\/05\/09\/reflections-on-my-beloved-india-in-an-election-year\/\">general elections<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, won 240 seats, down from 303 in 2019. The party is still set to retain power in the country with the support of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance bloc, which secured 293 seats overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition coalition, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, performed better than expected, securing 232 seats. The coalition is yet to concede at the time of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in previous election campaigns, the BJP continued to promote a Hindu nationalist agenda in an effort to appeal to India\u2019s Hindu majority. At a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2024\/04\/30\/presionar\/6218\/article.htm\/\">rally<\/a> in Rajasthan on 21 April, Prime Minister Modi made an obvious reference to Muslims in which he described them as \u2018infiltrators\u2019 and suggested that the opposition would redistribute the property of Hindus to Muslims if they came to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u2018India\u2019s election results clearly demonstrate that the BJP\u2019s aggressive drive to promote a Hindu nationalist agenda has not been widely successful, despite their predictions of a landslide victory.
