{"id":29920,"date":"2025-02-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/christian-couple-convicted-of-attempted-conversion-granted-bail-6429\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:13:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:13:12","slug":"christian-couple-convicted-of-attempted-conversion-granted-bail-6429","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/christian-couple-convicted-of-attempted-conversion-granted-bail-6429\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian couple convicted of attempted conversion granted bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9b173dfbe098f421d1b6decbaf4dc805.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>A Christian couple that were convicted of attempted conversion and sentenced to five years in prison in Uttar Pradesh, India, have been granted bail.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheeja and Jose Pappachan were granted bail by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on 5 and 6 February, respectively, and are expected to be released once the necessary documentation has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2025\/01\/30\/presionar\/6423\/article.htm\/\">sentenced<\/a> on 22 January under Section 3 of Uttar Pradesh&#8217;s Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which prohibits religious conversion through force, misrepresentation, coercion, or other fraudulent means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u2018CSW is glad that Mr and Mrs Pappachan have been granted bail, but we reiterate that they should never have been charged or sentenced in the first place.
