{"id":30022,"date":"2025-11-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/khmer-krom-monk-and-activists-receive-prison-sentences-6668\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:15:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:15:02","slug":"khmer-krom-monk-and-activists-receive-prison-sentences-6668","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/khmer-krom-monk-and-activists-receive-prison-sentences-6668\/","title":{"rendered":"Khmer Krom monk and activists receive prison sentences"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20c37dc38e3e480498f3238eae478687.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Authorities in Vietnam sentenced an ethnic Khmer Krom monk and two activists to three and a half years in prison on charges of \u2018abusing democratic freedoms\u2019 under Article 331 of the Vietnamese Criminal Code on 18 November.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venerable Kim Som Rinh, Thach Nga and Thach Xuan Dong were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/2025\/03\/28\/presionar\/6456\/article.htm\/\">arrested, charged and taken into custody<\/a> in Tra Vinh Province in southern Vietnam on 27 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venerable Kim Som Rinh is a respected leader known for advocating for religious and cultural rights. He was defrocked by the state-sanctioned Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in March 2024 in a move seen as an attempt to stifle dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three men have been held incommunicado without access to family or legal representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vietnam\u2019s criminal code contains broad and vague provisions and phrases like \u2018abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State\u2019 which are routinely weaponised against indigenous and religious minorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These cases are part of a broader pattern of repression against the Khmer Krom, an indigenous community that primarily resides in Vietnam\u2019s Mekong Delta who face systemic discrimination, cultural suppression, and restrictions on the freedoms of expression, assembly, and religion or belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/08\/viet-nam-un-experts-alarmed-ongoing-repression-khmer-krom-indigenous-peoples\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">August 2025 report<\/a> from a group UN experts confirmed that at least 17 Khmer Krom monks, activists, and defenders have been arbitrarily detained, subjected to unfair trials, and, in some cases, tortured during pre-trial detention, as part of an escalating crackdown on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said:<b><i> \u2018CSW condemns the arrest and subsequent prosecution of Venerable Kim Som Rinh and activists Thach Nga and Thach Xuan Dong, all of whom have been targeted because of their peaceful human rights advocacy.
