{"id":30068,"date":"2026-02-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/three-civilians-killed-in-sectarian-attacks-in-homs-6744\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:15:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:15:54","slug":"three-civilians-killed-in-sectarian-attacks-in-homs-6744","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/press\/three-civilians-killed-in-sectarian-attacks-in-homs-6744\/","title":{"rendered":"Three civilians killed in sectarian attacks in Homs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/604a6a47c4910abd69d6a8d35916e426.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\"><b>Two Alawites and a Christian have been killed in an escalation in sectarian attacks in Homs, Syria.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\">On 18 February Khidr Karakeet and his fianc\u00e9e Nada Salem, both Alawites, were killed when two masked men riding a motorcycle shot them at close range in the predominantly Alawite neighbourhood of Akrama.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\">Five days later, on 23 February, Iman Jarrous, a 47-year-old Christian school teacher, was shot in the head in the same neighbourhood. She was killed instantly. CSW sources in Homs believe that the attackers assumed she was an Alawite because she was not wearing a hijab.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\">Sectarian tensions between Syria\u2019s Sunni majority and Alawite and Druze minorities have been rising since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. On 23 November anti-Alawite riots erupted in Homs following the killing of a Sunni Muslim couple. The riots resulted in the destruction of hundreds of houses, shops and cars belonging to the Alawite community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\">Later, investigations revealed that the incident that sparked this violence essentially involved a burglary committed by a family member who had killed the couple when they discovered his identity, and had written phrases insulting Sunnis on the walls of the victims\u2019 house to hide his identity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"white-space-collapse: preserve\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u2018CSW extends deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of these heinous attacks.
