{"id":30798,"date":"2023-03-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/reports\/hrc52-oral-statement-on-the-situation-of-human-rights-in-myanmar-5961\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:39:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:39:13","slug":"hrc52-oral-statement-on-the-situation-of-human-rights-in-myanmar-5961","status":"publish","type":"reports","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/reports\/hrc52-oral-statement-on-the-situation-of-human-rights-in-myanmar-5961\/","title":{"rendered":"HRC52: Oral statement on the situation of human rights in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/6c2a8345666c276e2165261350916f92.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Item 4:<\/b> ID with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Organisation:<\/b>Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Speaker:<\/b> Ellis Heasley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you, Mr President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW thanks the Special Rapporteur for his update and continued work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation in Myanmar requires urgent action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 20,000 civilians have been arrested since the coup, and over 16,000 remain in detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Myanmar\u2019s democratically elected head of government Aung San Suu Kyi is serving a total of 33 years in prison. Aged 77, if she serves her full sentence she will not be released until she is 100 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those detained is Reverend Dr Hkalam Samson, former President of the Kachin Baptist Association who was arrested on 5 December 2022, and is facing charges of \u201cincitement\u201d, \u201cunlawful association\u201d and an additional charge under the counter-terrorism law, simply for holding a prayer meeting and additional meetings with the democratic and ethnic opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If convicted, Reverend Samson could face up to 13 years in prison. Aged 65, there are concerns about his health and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We call for Reverend Samson\u2019s immediate and unconditional release along with all other religious and political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conflict in the ethnic states has resulted in the displacement of 1.3 million people and the destruction of tens of thousands of houses and other buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of churches in Chin, Kachin, Karenni and Karen states have been bombed, burned, destroyed and desecrated, along with Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also note new restrictions imposed in Chin State requiring Chin Christians to seek permission to go to church on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We welcome the arms embargo and targeted sanctions, particularly on aviation fuel, imposed by many Member States, and we urge those who have not yet done so to join these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, we call on this Council to support existing and potential accountability mechanisms to ensure that the military is not permitted to commit atrocity crimes with impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CSW thanks the Special Rapporteur for his update and continued work.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":44793,"template":"","categories":[],"regions":[129,128],"class_list":["post-30798","reports","type-reports","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","regions-burma-myanmar","regions-east-asia"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/reports\/30798","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/reports"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/reports"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/reports\/30798\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":36343,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/reports\/30798\/revisions\/36343"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/44793"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=30798"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=30798"},{"taxonomy":"regions","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/es\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/regions?post=30798"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
