We express our profound concern over the ongoing incommunicado detention of Pastor Kim Jung-Wook, who today marks 4,000 days in an undisclosed location in North Korea, and call for the immediate release and return of Pastor Kim and two other South Korean missionaries, Kim Kook-kie and Choi Chun-gil, who have been similarly detained in North Korea for ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 8 October 2013, North Korea\u2019s State Security Department (SSD) [renamed \u201cMinistry of State Security (MSS)\u201d in 2016] arrested Pastor Kim Jung-Wook, who had been helping and spreading the gospel to North Koreans in Dandong, China for seven years, when he was lured into North Korea by the SSD to find out the fate of a group of North Korean refugees that were arrested and repatriated by the Chinese police while taking refuge at his church in Dandong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 30 May 2014, the North Korean Supreme Court convicted Pastor Kim of espionage, conspiracy to subvert the state, illegal border crossing, anti-state propaganda and agitation, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Pastor Kim has not been allowed to communicate with or have visits from his family, legal counsel of his choosing or South Korean officials from the time of his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Missionaries Kim Kook-kie and Choi Chun-gil were similarly arrested by the North Korean SSD in October and December 2014 respectively. Both have been held incommunicado and were sentenced to life imprisonment by the North Korean Supreme Court on 23 June 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korea has punished the three South Koreans for their peaceful missionary work, which is protected by Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as a political offense. Their arbitrary arrest and detention violate international human rights law, including the right to freedom of religion or belief, the liberty of person and the due process of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are deeply concerned for the three missionaries\u2019 health and safety in detention and demand that the North Korean government immediately clarify their fate and whereabouts, provide access to their families and legal counsel, and ultimately release them so that they can return home to South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
