We share the group of experts\u2019 concern over the victimisation and targeting of critical voices including leaders of the Catholic and other Christian churches whose \u2018mobilisation and convening capacity\u2019 are considered a threat to the government\u2019s control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we welcome the news that Protestant pastor Rudy Palacios Vargas and five of his friends and family members were among the 20 political prisoners released on 10 January\u202fafter\u202fnearly six\u202fmonths\u202fin\u202fincommunicado detention,\u202fthey remain under house arrest\u202for subject to precautionary measures that require them to regularly report to their local police stations.\u202fTheir friend and church member, Mauricio Alonso Petri,\u202fdied in\u202fdetention\u202fin August 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate case, Roman Catholic lay leaders Carmen Mar\u00eda S\u00e1enz Mart\u00ednez and Lesbia del Socorro Guti\u00e9rrez Poveda were also released into house arrest in Matagalpa on 29 November 2025, after spending nearly 16 months in incommunicado detention. Being released into house arrest, does not undo the injustice committed against them, nor are they free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u202fcall on the government of Nicaragua to grant them full freedom without condition, and to immediately release all remaining political prisoners including Pastor Efr\u00e9n Antonio\u202fV\u00edlchez\u202fL\u00f3pez who is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence on false charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW is also concerned by the forced exile of eight nuns from the Order of Capuchin \u2013 five are Nicaraguan citizens and three are foreign nationals.
