We’ve partnered with 24-7 Prayer to produce a series of podcasts over Lent, interviewing inspirational people we’ve worked with over the years! So the Prayer Diary during Lent will take a deeper look at each of the countries featured in the series.. This week we’re praying for Cuba, and the issues faced by Cuban church leaders like Omar Gude Pérez.

When he left Cuba, Omar passed on the leadership of the Apostolic Movement in Cuba was to his nephew, Yiorvis Bravo Denis. But this has made Yiorvis a target too: the government has been trying to evict him and his family from their home, which also serves as the headquarters of the Apostolic Movement. Please pray for Yiorvis as he battles to keep his home.

Please pray for Reverend Juan Carlos Núñez Velázquez, who is being threatened with one year of house arrest after noise complaints were made against the church that meets in his back garden and is still waiting to hear back about his appeal.

2016 added to the number of churches demolished or seized by the government in Cuba, especially churches belonging to the Apostolic Movement. Please pray for protection for the churches that remain, and that congregations which have lost their building would find somewhere safe to worship.

Nine Cuban church leaders were detained during 2016, including Mario Felix Lleonart Barroso, who was jailed during President Obama’s visit to Cuba. Though he was later released, it was a strong reminder that pastors and human rights defenders like Mario Felix are in constant danger of being imprisoned. Pray for their protection today.

We’re so grateful for all the people we work with in Cuba: their tireless dedication to religious freedom is an inspiration, especially as it’s dangerous, often thankless work. Please pray for them today: that God would grant them strength, courage, and protection.

O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. He will be gracious if you ask for help. He will surely respond to the sound of your cries. Isaiah 30:18-19. Pray this verse over Cuba today!

Loving heavenly Father, today we pray for Cuba and all those in that country who face intense pressure and suffering because of their faith. Watch over them: guard them, and deliver justice to them, we pray. Amen.
