{"id":28503,"date":"2015-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/csw-welcomes-un-human-rights-office-in-seoul-2637\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T21:50:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T20:50:18","slug":"csw-welcomes-un-human-rights-office-in-seoul-2637","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/csw-welcomes-un-human-rights-office-in-seoul-2637\/","title":{"rendered":"CSW welcomes UN Human Rights Office in Seoul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/46ac2e165235b634895257cd1d29fe39.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW welcomes the establishment of a new UN Human Rights Office to focus on the human rights situation in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) welcomes the establishment of a new UN Human Rights Office in Seoul, South Korea, which will focus on the human rights situation in the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea (DPRK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The office fulfils one of the recommendations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/2014\/02\/17\/news\/1987\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ground-breaking February 2014 report<\/a> of the UN Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the DPRK, endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council, to establish \u201ca field-based structure to strengthen monitoring and documentation of the situation of human rights in the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al Hussein will open the UN Human Rights Office as part of his three-day official visit to Seoul which concludes on 25 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission of Inquiry concluded that \u201cunspeakable atrocities\u201d continue to be perpetrated against the North Korean people, and that \u201cthe gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a State that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world.\u201d The February 2014 report concluded that \u201ca number of long-standing and ongoing patterns of systematic and widespread violations in [North Korea] met the high threshold required for crimes against humanity in international law\u201d and that these crimes \u201cclearly merit a criminal investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 2014 the UN General Assembly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/2014\/11\/19\/news\/2373\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\">voted in favour<\/a> of a recommendation that the Security Council refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court (ICC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s East Asia Team Leader Benedict Rogers said, <b><i>\u201cWe warmly welcome the opening of the new UN office in Seoul, which was specifically recommended by the UN Commission of Inquiry. This is a very significant step forward and will serve to keep the appalling human rights situation in North Korea on the agenda of the international community, and continue the process of documenting crimes against humanity in North Korea with a view to holding the perpetrators of such crimes accountable.
