Three Protestant members from Uni\u00f3n Ju\u00e1rez village, La Trinitaria municipality in Chiapas State were physically prevented from entering the village on 31 August and one was arbitrarily detained for 24 hours.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Village leaders blocked the three men from entering the village, citing a curfew, and other travel restrictions were placed on Protestants in the village.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Luis Herrera of the Coordination of Christian Organisation (COOC), Ren\u00e9 V\u00e1zquez, who was arbitrarily detained for 24 hours, had his mobile phone and cash stolen. Vasquez and two other Protestant men were returning home when they were stopped at a checkpoint outside the village at approximately 8pm. According to Herrera, there are no travel restrictions on anyone else but the Protestants in the village.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The events in Uni\u00f3n Ju\u00e1rez follow the arbitrary detention of three other Protestant men on 22 August in Nuevo Las Tacitas, Ocosingo municipality, Chiapas State. The three men, who belong to the Presbyterian Church, were detained as they arrived to the home of a local family to celebrate a religious thanksgiving day. They were imprisoned and ordered to pay a fine. According to COOC they refused to do so and the musical instruments they were carrying were confiscated. The men were freed after 24 hours but the instruments were not returned.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

COOC reports that the government has not moved to hold local authorities to account for their illegal actions in either case. Herrera has also expressed concern that 27 families in Uni\u00f3n Ju\u00e1rez have had their electricity cut and access to clean water blocked for almost a year and a half because they declined to participate in Roman Catholic religious festivals. Many of the villagers now suffer from health problems because of their lack of access to clean water. Although the State Government has been slow to act, Herrera added that officials have promised to resolve the situation by mid September.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSW\u2019s Special Ambassador Stuart Windsor said,<\/span><\/span>\u201cWe continue to call on the Chiapas State and Federal Governments to take urgent action to protect the fundamental rights of the people of Uni\u00f3n Ju\u00e1rez, and those of religious minorities in other parts of the State. Local officials who abuse their authority to imprison members of religious minorities arbitrarily and illegally, and to expropriate their belongings, must be held to account. The Mexican government should be ashamed that as a result of its inaction to protect its citizens\u2019 fundamental rights, the situation in Union Juarez has continued to deteriorate and the health of men, women and children who have had no access to clean water for a year and a half is now in jeopardy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
