{"id":28715,"date":"2016-10-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/mps-globally-call-for-release-of-vietnamese-lawyer-3328\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:42:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:42:11","slug":"mps-globally-call-for-release-of-vietnamese-lawyer-3328","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/mps-globally-call-for-release-of-vietnamese-lawyer-3328\/","title":{"rendered":"MPs globally call for release of Vietnamese lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2f3ef1983cf656f8529de0ff9eb60057.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Members of parliament from around the world sent an open letter to Vietnamese Prime Minister <span style=\"color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-color: white\">Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Ph\u00fac on 24 October 2016, calling on the government in Hanoi to immediately and unconditionally release Vietnamese lawyer Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i and his assistant L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><i>\u201cWe are pleased to note that Vietnam is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibits arbitrary detention, guarantees the right to a fair trial, and stipulates that detainees be treated with humanity and respect for their dignity. In line with these provisions, we the undersigned parliamentarians respectfully request that the Vietnamese Government urgently reviews the cases of Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i and L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0,\u201d<\/i><\/b> the letter states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter was initiated by Marie-Luise D\u00f6tt, Member of German Bundestag and signed by 73 parliamentarians from 14 countries on four continents (*). Organizations involved with the letter\u2014VETO! Human Rights Defenders Network, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), and Christian Solidarity Worldwide\u2014welcomed its delivery and called on the Vietnamese government to comply with its requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><i>\u201cNguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i and L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0 were providing a valuable public service by defending the rights of their fellow citizens. The charges against them should be dropped and they should be allowed to freely exercise their rights. Their continued imprisonment constitutes a black mark on Vietnam\u2019s human rights record and its international credibility,\u201d<\/i><\/b>said APHR Chairperson Charles Santiago, a member of the Malaysian Parliament who also signed the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawyer Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i was arrested in Hanoi on 16 December 2015, along with his assistant Ms. L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0, on charges of \u201cconducting propaganda against the State\u201d under Article 88 of the country\u2019s Penal Code. If convicted, \u0110\u00e0i and H\u00e0 could each face up to twenty years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0110\u00e0i is one of the best-known human rights activists in Vietnam and previously spent four years in prison and four years under house arrest as a result of his human rights work. Shortly before his arrest in December 2015, he was abducted and beaten after organising a training on the rights of Vietnamese citizens according to the Constitution. Prior to her arrest, L\u00ea Thu H\u00e0 had also been arrested and interrogated in connection with her work for Conscience TV, a YouTube channel which reported on social justice issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><i>\u201cNguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u00e0i has spent over 15 years providing legal advice to vulnerable social groups including religious minorities. He has been at the forefront of those peacefully advocating for democratic reform and the protection of human rights.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"border-width: 1pt; border-style: none; border-color: windowtext; padding: 0in\"><b><i>These detentions underscore the fact that citizens of Vietnam are still not free to fully exercise their human rights and to advocate for the rights of others\u201d,<\/i><\/b>said Benedict Rogers, East Asia Team Leader at Christian Solidarity Worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to calling for the immediate and unconditional release of both \u0110\u00e0i and H\u00e0, parliamentarians urged Vietnamese authorities to ensure that the conditions to which they are subject in detention comply with international standards, and to guarantee that they have access to legal counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><i>\u201cThe broad international support for this case shows the consent to the universality of human rights. Nobody can turn cold shoulder when a human rights defender is arrested and held incommunicado for nearly a year. We hope the Vietnamese government will heed the word of these law makers and immediately release Mr. \u0110\u00e0i and Ms. Thu H\u00e0 who have done nothing but exercise their basic rights according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Vietnam is a state party,\u201d<\/i><\/b> said Vu Quoc Dung, Executive Director of VETO!
