{"id":28918,"date":"2018-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/iranian-christian-faces-spurious-charges-after-arrest-4002\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:46:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:46:32","slug":"iranian-christian-faces-spurious-charges-after-arrest-4002","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/iranian-christian-faces-spurious-charges-after-arrest-4002\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian Christian faces spurious charges after arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/89b2db38bea8ba4380bf52c8c2d78b9a.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Christian named Mohammadali Yassaghi faces spurious charges after his arrest on 10 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW has learned that a Christian named Mohammadali Yassaghi, who is also known as &#8220;Estifan&#8221;, was arrested on 10 April 2018, accused of \u2018spreading propaganda against the establishment\u2019 and later transported to Babol prison in the province of Mazandaran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 52 year-old father of three and member of the Church of Iran denomination, Mr Yassaghi converted to Christianity over 20 years ago. His arrest is part of an ongoing official campaign targeting Christians through intimidation, spurious arrests and charges, and excessive sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently, four Christians who had been convicted of &#8216;acting against national security\u2019 by \u2018promoting Zionist Christianity\u2019 had seen their ten-year sentences upheld on appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani, Mohammadreza Omidi (Youhan), Yasser Mossayebzadeh and Saheb Fadaie, also from the Church of Iran, had their ten-year sentences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2018\/05\/08\/%e6%8c%89\/3954\/article.htm\/\">upheld on appeal<\/a> by the Iranian authorities in Rasht On 2 May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said:<b><i><\/i><\/b><b><i>\u201cWe are deeply concerned by the continuing use of the criminal justice system to suppress the right to freedom of religion or belief in Iran. Mr Yassaghi\u2019s arrest violates the Iranian constitution, which recognises the right of the Christian community to freedom of religion or belief, and is also contrary to Iran\u2019s obligations under international covenants to which it is a signatory. We urge the Iranian authorities to drop all charges against Mr Yassaghi, and to release him.
