In 2017 he was sentenced to two years in prison following his conviction on blasphemy charges.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph of Ahok completing the administrative process in advance of his release was published on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BtAFO8Hhqpc\/\">Instagram<\/a> account on 24 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Chinese Christian, Ahok was Indonesia\u2019s most prominent ethnic minority politician and the first non-Muslim governor of Jakarta for over 50 years. However, his 2017 campaign for re-election was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2017\/05\/09\/%e6%8c%89\/3549\/article.htm\/\">overshadowed<\/a> by the blasphemy allegation against him. He lost the vote and was later imprisoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahok\u2019s old ally, President Joko Widodo, is running for re-election in Indonesia\u2019s presidential elections on 17 April. There are concerns that religious tensions will be a factor in the campaigns. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2018\/11\/08\/%e6%8c%89\/4160\/article.htm\/\">report<\/a> published in November 2018, CSW warned that \u201cradical Islamist extremism, the politicisation of religion, and identity politics are contributing to a continuing and severe rise in religious intolerance in Indonesia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joko Widodo has selected Ma\u2019ruf Amin, a 75 year-old conservative cleric and former head of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), as his vice-presidential candidate. Mr Amin signed the <i>fatwa (<\/i>religious edict) which resulted in Ahok\u2019s conviction and imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benedict Rogers, CSW\u2019s East Asia Team Leader, said: \u201c<b><i>We welcome the release of Ahok, although we believe his conviction and imprisonment represent a serious injustice and illustrate the dangerous misuse of the blasphemy laws.
