{"id":28998,"date":"2019-02-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/csw-signs-onto-statement-calling-for-un-fact-finding-mission-4224\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:48:14","slug":"csw-signs-onto-statement-calling-for-un-fact-finding-mission-4224","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/csw-signs-onto-statement-calling-for-un-fact-finding-mission-4224\/","title":{"rendered":"CSW signs onto statement calling for UN fact-finding mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/894aea460bc54c53f4a65a96c5c3afa5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW has <span style=\"color:black\">joined over 15 organisations in calling on<\/span>the UN Human Rights Council to adopt a resolution establishing an international fact-finding mission to investigate mass arbitrary detentions in <span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial\">Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR)<\/span><\/b><span style=\"color:black\"><b>, China.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2019\/02\/07\/report\/4223\/article.htm\/\" style=\"text-align: left\" target=\"_blank\">The statement<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"><\/span><span style=\"color:black\">details the ongoing human rights crisis in the region in the northwest of the country, where it is estimated that over one million predominantly Muslim Uyghurs, Kazakhs and members of other ethnic groups have been<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2018\/10\/16\/report\/4122\/article.htm\/\">detained without charge<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> in political re-education camps since 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:black\">The detentions appear to be mainly driven by ethnicity, however there is also a clear religious element to the crackdown, illustrated by the fact that accessing religious materials online and taking part in communal religious activities have been given as reasons for detention, and by witness reports of detainees being required to renounce Islam and promise not to follow religion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:black\">While the situation in Xinjiang has prompted widespread international condemnation, including at the UN, China has continued to tightly control and restrict visits to the region, with some areas completely off limits. The statement claims: <b><i>\u201cAn international fact-finding mission mandated by the Human Rights Council is needed to uncover the truth.
