{"id":29135,"date":"2020-01-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/assyrian-christian-priest-released-on-bail-4523\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:56:20","slug":"assyrian-christian-priest-released-on-bail-4523","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/assyrian-christian-priest-released-on-bail-4523\/","title":{"rendered":"Assyrian Christian Priest released on bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9b8e469527ab88e28167de9183534fc3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW sources have confirmed that Assyrian Christian priest, Father Sefer Bile\u00e7en (known as Father Aho), was released on bail on 14 January, and is now awaiting trial.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Aho, who has been taking care of the 1500 year-old Mor Yakub Monastery in Mardin province for many years, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2020\/01\/14\/%e6%8c%89\/4522\/article.htm\/\">arrested<\/a> by the Turkish Gendarmerie in the Assyrian town of \u00dc\u00e7k\u00f6y (Arkash in Syriac language) on 9 January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph Yar, chair of the town\u2019s council, and Musa Ta\u015ftekin from Dibek village were also arrested. Both are also Assyrian Christians. Musa Ta\u015ftekin was released after initial interrogations; however, it is unclear whether Joseph Yar has also been released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three men were reportedly arrested on the basis of secret testimony by a member of the People&#8217;s Defence Forces (HPG), the military wing of the Kurdistan Workers&#8217; Party (PKK), which has been designated a \u2018terrorist organisation\u2019 by Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cWhile we welcome the news that Father Aho has been released on bail, it is still deeply concerning that the charges against him remain in effect. We call on Turkey to drop the charges against him and the other Assyrian Christians.
