{"id":29175,"date":"2020-04-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/journalist-threatened-with-imprisonment-and-repercussions-for-his-family-4598\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T18:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T17:57:10","slug":"journalist-threatened-with-imprisonment-and-repercussions-for-his-family-4598","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/journalist-threatened-with-imprisonment-and-repercussions-for-his-family-4598\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalist threatened with imprisonment and repercussions for his family"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/8f833648a47d3e66e2c0445aab044a87.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Yoel Su\u00e1rez, a Cuban independent journalist, was summoned to Siboney Police Station in Havana on 27 March, where he was interrogated by police and threatened with imprisonment and unspecified \u201crepercussions\u201d for his family.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Su\u00e1rez, 29, has worked with non-state media outlets in Cuba since 2014 and has written extensively about human rights and freedom of religion or belief issues, including the arrest, trial and imprisonment of Cuban pastors Ram\u00f3n Rigal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/2020\/03\/31\/press\/4597\/article.htm\">Adya Exp\u00f3sito<\/a>, who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/2019\/04\/19\/press\/4310\/article.htm\">imprisoned in April 2019<\/a> for refusing to send their children to government-run schools. He has written for a range of news outlets including Diario de Cuba, Newsweek, and Univisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result of his work, Mr Su\u00e1rez has been regularly targeted by the authorities. In 2016 he was expelled from the Latin American News Agency, Cuba\u2019s official state news agency. Between the end of 2018 and 2019 Yoe was detained and interrogated by State Security officials on three separate occasions at Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed International Airport in Havana for his journalism activities. He was also arrested in August 2019 in Guant\u00e1namo, where he was accused of \u2018counterrevolutionary activities.\u2019 His phone was confiscated and he was threatened with imprisonment if he were to return to the city again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently, in February 2020 Mr Su\u00e1rez was summoned again to Siboney Police Station in Havana where he was interrogated for three hours by a state security agent who threatened reprisals against his family because of his work. Yoe was also informed that he has been subjected to an indefinite travel ban, \u201cby order of the Leadership [of the Cuban Department of State Security].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cCSW condemns the Cuban authorities\u2019 continued targeting of Yoel Su\u00e1rez for his peaceful work covering human rights and religious affairs in Cuba. It is deeply concerning that on at least two occasions officials have also threatened repercussions against his family. The fact that Mr. Su\u00e1rez has also been placed under a travel ban is unacceptable.
