Earlier, in April 2020, two Christians from Karaj, Pastor Amin Khaki and Rokhsare Ghanbari (Mahrokh), were told not to return to prison to complete their sentences following their temporarily release amid concerns about the spread of COVID-19 in Iran. Ms Ghanbari\u2019s case gained international attention when former US Vice President Mike Pence <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VP\/status\/1157302878433943553\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">raised concerns<\/span><\/a> on Twitter that she had been \u201cpunished\u201d for exercising her freedom to worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The renewed targeting of Christians in Karaj comes as CSW, in collaboration with Article 18, Middle East Concern and Open Doors, publish their latest <a href=\"https:\/\/meconcern.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/2020-Report-FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">annual report<\/span><\/a> on violations against Christians in Iran in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other findings, the report highlights that \u201cDuring 2020, Iranian Christians, along with other religious minorities, continued to suffer multiple violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief. The COVID-19 crisis had little impact on the repressive measures taken against Christians and other religious minorities.\u201d It also confirms the arrests of 115 Christians during 2020, 38 of whom were detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cThe renewed crackdown on Christians in Karaj illustrates a continuing disregard for the right to freedom of religion or belief which must be raised with the Iranian government during bilateral and multilateral dialogues.
