{"id":29430,"date":"2021-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/ten-men-found-guilty-of-sectarian-violence-5306\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:02:52","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:02:52","slug":"ten-men-found-guilty-of-sectarian-violence-5306","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/ten-men-found-guilty-of-sectarian-violence-5306\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten men found guilty of sectarian violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/b3d34fdc530c6b8f3cc509fffdc36e71.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>On Tuesday 15 June, a criminal court in Minya, Upper Egypt, found ten Muslim men guilty of sectarian violence which took place in May 2016 in the village of Al-Karm, Abou Qarqas in Minya Governate.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The men are believed to have been part of a mob that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2016\/05\/27\/%e6%8c%89\/3124\/article.htm\/\">attacked the Christian community<\/a> in Al-Karm after a Christian man was accused of being in a relationship with a divorced Muslim woman. During the violence, the mother of the accused man, Mrs Suad Thabet, 72, was attacked, beaten and stripped naked in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ten men were each sentenced to five years in prison. However, in December 2020 three other individuals accused of assaulting Mrs Thabet were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2020\/12\/18\/%e6%8c%89\/4930\/article.htm\/\">acquitted<\/a>. Mrs Thabet and her family have appealed the acquittals, and CSW\u2019s sources now report that it is likely these men will be found guilty too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, a local human rights organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/eipr.org\/press\/2021\/06\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%AD%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D8%A5%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AA%D9%87%D9%85%D9%8A%D9%86-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%A1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%82%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A7%D8%A6%D9%81%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%B9%D8%A9?fbclid=IwAR14rONMn6Sh3RO07g6zjBPVB1qRpKHnRp0GVmm1jvAmCsGJq-m0ktWGbHg\">welcomed<\/a> the sentences in a statement, saying: \u201cAlthough it has taken five years to reach this verdict, these sentences are a step in the right direction to apply justice without discrimination between citizens on the bases of their religion rather than applying the usual customary reconciliation sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cCSW welcomes the sentencing of ten of the individuals found to be complicit in sectarian violence in Al-Karm, although the Criminal Court in Minya has indeed been painfully slow in implementing justice.
