{"id":29555,"date":"2022-01-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/nine-christians-released-from-prison-pending-a-review-of-their-sentences-5526\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:05:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:05:43","slug":"nine-christians-released-from-prison-pending-a-review-of-their-sentences-5526","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/nine-christians-released-from-prison-pending-a-review-of-their-sentences-5526\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Christians released from prison pending a review of their sentences"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/8ce8c5b8e42076999c5d213bd6f41f99.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>An Iranian church leader was among nine Christians released from prison within the last week, pending a review of their sentences.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Matthias (Abdulreza Ali) Haghnejad from the Church of Iran denomination was initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2019\/10\/18\/%e6%8c%89\/4480\/article.htm\/\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">sentenced<\/span><\/a> to five years in prison for \u201cendangering state security\u201d and \u201cpromoting Zionist Christianity\u201d following a brief trial on 23 September 2019. Eight other members of the Church of Iran who were convicted alongside him also received five-year sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pastor\u2019s sentence was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2020\/03\/04\/%e6%8c%89\/4569\/article.htm\/\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">upheld<\/span><\/a> on 25 February 2020 without a hearing, after Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamanei, reportedly permitted the judge to bypass court procedures. In November 2021, the Supreme Court in Tehran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/2021\/11\/29\/%e6%8c%89\/5495\/article.htm\/\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">announced<\/span><\/a> that it would be reviewing the sentences delivered to Pastor Haghnejad and those convicted with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s sources report that Pastor Haghnejad, who was released from prison on 30 December 2021, is expecting a new trial. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meconcern.org\/2022\/01\/03\/iran-temporary-release-of-converts-from-rasht\/\"><span style=\"color:#0563C1\">Middle East Concern<\/span><\/a>, the eight other Christians were released on 1 January, pending a review of their sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u201cCSW welcomes the news that Pastor Matthias Haghnejad and the Christians sentenced alongside him have been able to return home after spending nearly three years in prison. However, they are still facing unfounded and excessive charges simply for exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief.
