{"id":29643,"date":"2022-07-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/csw-welcomes-appointment-of-new-special-rapporteur-on-freedom-of-religion-5767\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:07:39","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:07:39","slug":"csw-welcomes-appointment-of-new-special-rapporteur-on-freedom-of-religion-5767","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/csw-welcomes-appointment-of-new-special-rapporteur-on-freedom-of-religion-5767\/","title":{"rendered":"CSW welcomes appointment of new Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/a3680f8c6b7ae4ac387c201e3c9a1fec.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW welcomes the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC)\u2019s appointment of Dr Nazila Ghanea as the new Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief (FoRB), which was confirmed by the Council on 8 July.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ghanea is a professor of international human rights law and director of international human rights programmes at the University of Oxford. She will take over the mandate from Dr Ahmed Shaheed, who served as rapporteur from 2016-2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/special-procedures\/sr-religion-or-belief\">Special Rapporteur on FoRB<\/a> is an independent expert appointed by the UNHRC and tasked with identifying \u201cexisting and emerging obstacles to the enjoyment of the right to freedom of religion or belief and [presenting] recommendations on ways and means to overcome such obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The position was established by the UN Commission on Human Rights in 1986 under the title of \u2018Special Rapporteur on religious intolerance\u2019, which was subsequently changed to \u2018Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief\u2019 in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s UN Officer Claire Denman said: <b><i>\u201cCSW congratulates Dr Ghanea on her well-deserved appointment as Special Rapporteur, and we look forward to working closely with her as she takes on this key mandate.
