{"id":30120,"date":"2026-06-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/press\/several-shia-citizens-arrested-6836\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:16:51","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:16:51","slug":"several-shia-citizens-arrested-6836","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/press\/several-shia-citizens-arrested-6836\/","title":{"rendered":"Several Shi&#8217;a citizens arrested"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/c5ee96eb2bea5f7b3674146524f88acb.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>CSW learned that a number of Shi\u2019a citizens were arrested in Egypt in the last week as part of a campaign to crack down on Shi\u2019a activities before their holy day of Ashura on 25 June.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shrine of Imam Hussein was also closed, reportedly \u2018for maintenance.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haydar Qandeel, a prominent Shi\u2019a journalist, was arrested in the evening of 22 June and the police refused requests to reveal his whereabouts or the reasons for his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Qandeel was previously arrested in 2019 and charged with \u2018spreading the Shi\u2019a faith and establishing an illegal group.\u2019 He remained in custody until March 2020, when he appeared before state security prosecution. He was eventually released in August 2020 and was asked to report to the police weekly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a family member, Qandeel disappeared on the same day that several Shi\u2019a citizens were arrested, including Mustafa Al-Mubarak, his sister\u2019s husband, and a New Zealand national of the Shi\u2019a religious persuasion at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qandeel\u2019s brother, Youssef Qandeel, identified other individuals who were reportedly detained, including Islam Abdel-Khaleq Abu Al-Majd, Ammar Abdel-Khaleq Abu Al-Majd, Hussein Ammar Abdel-Khaleq Abu Al-Majd, Amin Ahmed, Amr Abdullah, and Fathi Mukhtar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a research paper published by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights ( EIPR) in June 2016 titled \u2018<i>Forbidden Diversity in the State Religion: The Case of Religious Freedom for Egyptian Shias<\/i>,\u2019 Shi\u2019a citizens in Egypt have been subjected to systematic violations affecting seven fundamental rights: the rights to life, physical integrity, freedom of religion or belief, privacy, non-discrimination, fair trial, and freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW\u2019s Founder President Mervyn Thomas said: <b><i>\u2018The series of arrests of Shi\u2019a citizens ahead of a significant holy day not only violate the constitutional provision stating that freedom of belief is absolute, they also violate relevant stipulations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Egypt is a signatory.
