{"id":30543,"date":"2020-03-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csw-yeo.1wp.site\/reports\/hrc43-oral-statement-during-id-with-special-rapporteur-on-forb-4566\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T19:33:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:33:27","slug":"hrc43-oral-statement-during-id-with-special-rapporteur-on-forb-4566","status":"publish","type":"reports","link":"https:\/\/www.csw.org.uk\/zh\/reports\/hrc43-oral-statement-during-id-with-special-rapporteur-on-forb-4566\/","title":{"rendered":"HRC43: Oral Statement during ID with Special Rapporteur on FoRB"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/c3fe6fce2aaf3d672e8740cc6758ee20.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Agenda Item 3:<\/b> Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Organisation:<\/b>Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Speaker:<\/b>Claire Denman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you Madame President,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experiences of women have historically been eclipsed in analyses of violations of the right to freedom of religion or belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rapporteur\u2019s report raises concerns regarding the legal imposition of restrictive dress codes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We share the Rapporteur\u2019s concerns regarding Iran, where women who protest against the country\u2019s forced veiling laws have been arbitrarily detained and arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue also remains of serious concern in Sudan. While the repeal of Sudan\u2019s public order laws in December 2019 was widely welcomed, it is important to note that the repealed laws were local ones implemented in each state, and that national laws remain in effect through the 1991 Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is under these national laws that religious minority women have historically been arrested, fined and given lashes on public indecency charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW calls on Sudan to honour recent commitments to freedom of religion or belief by prioritising the review and amendment of the laws contained within the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CSW is also deeply concerned by recent reports that Uyghur Muslim women in China\u2019s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region are suffering severe violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief and are forced to stop wearing the veil.
