In an official response to senior UN experts in January 2021, Iran\u2019s judiciary claimed \u201cnobody is prosecuted on religious grounds\u201d. However, in the same response, it admitted to taking legal action against members of \u201cenemy groups\u201d and \u201cprivate churches\u201d (house-churches), which it accused of belonging to a \u201cZionist Christian cult\u201d with \u201canti-security purposes\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persian-speaking Christians are penalised for the peaceful practice of their faith. They are exposed to harassment, arrest, interrogation, and pressure to recant or to commit to refrain from meeting other Christians or engaging in Christian activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These Christians, denied access to \u201crecognised\u201d church buildings by the state authorities, can be charged with \u201canti-security activities\u201d if they gather in informal private meetings for worship, prayer, and Bible study.
