Prayer Diary: Nigeria

3 Dec 2017

Last month we prayed for Nigeria as part of One Month, One Church, One Prayer: a fantastic opportunity to unite with churches all over the world and pray as one church family! November is over, but Nigeria still needs your faithful prayers as its people continues to face huge challenges.

  • Sunday 3 December

Pastor Gideon runs Nehemiah Camp, which cares for over 400 people who have been driven from their homes by the violence of Fulani militia seeking to take their land and burn their villages. Pastor Gideon runs Nehemiah Camp without any government support: thank God for him and for churches and individuals  who support him. Pray that God would provide abundantly for his work.

  • Monday 4 December

Imagine setting out on a journey, fearing you may not reach your destination. This is the reality for many Nigerians, as kidnapping for ransom is a severe problem, especially on the road from Kaduna to Abuja. Please pray that God would protect every traveller and that the kidnappers would be brought to justice.

  • Tuesday 5 December

“We want you to hold us in prayer, that the Lord will bring an end to killings.” These are the words of Victoria Illiya, a woman from Nehemiah Camp whom we met during a recent visit. Her village was attacked by Fulani militia. When her husband was killed she was forced to flee, and must now provide for her five children by herself. Pray for God to provide for Victoria, and that she’d find somewhere safe to live permanently with her family.

  • Wednesday 6 December

Plateau State borders Kaduna State and is seeing a resurgence in violence by Fulani militia. In September, 15 people died in an attack on Ancha village, while 22 were killed and six wounded when Hwak-Kwata village was attacked. Pray that the government would make a serious effort to end the violence and arrest the perpetrators.

  • Thursday 7 December

As well as attacks by Fulani militia, Nigerians face the threat of the terrorist group Boko Haram. It’s recently split into two factions, doubling the violence: over two months this summer there were 79 attacks in one state alone. In a single attack, a suicide bombing in Maiduguri, 17 people were killed and 21 were injured. Pray for swift healing for the survivors, and for God to bring an end to the violence soon.

  • Friday 8 December

In July, Luka Binniyat became  the latest journalist to be harassed judicially for highlighting Fulani attacks in southern Kaduna, when the state government prosecuted and detained him – despite his ill-health – for incorrectly reporting on the Fulani attacks. He was remanded in custody after having been given bail conditions so harsh that they were described as ‘nearly impossible’. Pray for his unconditional release.

  • Saturday 9 December

Father God, we pray again for the nation of Nigeria. There’s so much to pray for, from attacks by terror groups to kidnapping to questions about the rule of law: but we know that you’re a God who is powerful enough for every detail, no matter how small or complicated. Thank you for all you have already done in Nigeria. Bring justice where it’s needed, peace to those in turmoil, and provision for those without, we pray. Amen.
