ERITREA: Eritrean journalist hounded for protesting human rights abuses
We reported in March that Christian human rights lawyer, Gao Zhisheng, had reappeared alive after thirteen months of international pressure. Only weeks later he went missing again, and hasn’t been seen since. Fears of Gao’s disappearance clearly highlight the worsening situation for human rights lawyers who bring cases against the government.
>>> Pray for Gao and his family
After weeks of uncertainty during their trial in an Iranian court, we heard that Maryam and Marzieh were acquitted! However, they were warned of severe consequences if they were caught practicing Christianity again, and have now left Iran. Charged with apostasy and the propagation of Christianity, the two young women were first put on trial in Tehran’s revolutionary court - normally reserved for enemies of the state and military cases - before being redirected to a lower level court.
>>> Give thanks and continue to pray for Maryam and Marzieh
Yonas Embye, an independent Eritrean journalist and Christian, had been staging a weekly one-man protest in Kampala against the imprisonment of journalists in Eritrea. He has now been forced into hiding following threats from an Eritrean diplomat – an all too common occurrence due to Eritrea’s aggressive policy towards anyone it regards as a dissident, even outside Eritrea.
>>> Pray for Yonas and send him a message of encouragement via Twitter!
