North Korea's suffering: respond in prayer!

In June 2010 we are focusing on North Korea for a dedicated week of prayer. Here we outline the key issues for you to pray about in your church, small group or in your personal devotions.  CSW’s North Korea prayer pack will help you to pray for the nation and people of North Korea.

The people of North Korea are suffering brutal oppression and persecution, and are in desperate need of your prayers. Please stand with us, lifting the following concerns up in prayer:

Famine
In the context of the regieme's use of food as a weapon of control and fluctating permission for international aid to reach those in North Korea, food shortages, malnutrition and starvation remain a tragic reality.

Detention and Imprisonment
Systematic and severe human rights abuses, amounting to crimes against humanity, characterise the detention and imprisonment system.  Detainees and prisoners consistently report that the fierce cocktail of harsh treatment, forced labour and food rations combine to guarantee an unusually high death rate.

Religious Freedom
Juche state ideology is ruthlessly enforced to the point of compulsory worship of its leader Kim Jong-Il.  Anything practiced outside this set of beliefs, including the Christian faith, is considered treacherous dissent, and is harshly punished.

Refugees
Currently the 30-50,000 North Korean refugees who escape the country into China face continued hardship and considerable personal dangers such as bride-selling, sexual exploitation and forced labour.  The fact that many are willing to brave this horrendous treatment highlights just how unbearable the conditions in North Korea are.
