Submission to the 37th Session of the Universal Periodic Review

CSW is a human rights organisation specialising in the right to freedom of religion or belief (FoRB).

This submission seeks to highlight violations of FoRB and related human rights which have taken place in Myanmar during the reporting period. It details Myanmar’s failure to implement the legal reforms necessary to ensure full respect for FoRB, the rise of Buddhist nationalism, and violations resulting from these two factors, specifically against the Rohingya people, Muslims, and Christians. It also briefly touches on violations of freedom of expression.

During its second Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Myanmar accepted 16 recommendations relating to FoRB, including calls to promote religious tolerance and interfaith harmony (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Sudan, Turkey), to investigate violence and discrimination against religious minorities (Iceland), to prosecute perpetrators of violence against religious minorities (Iceland), and to take steps to prevent and avoid conflicts on ethnic or religious bases (Ethiopia, Russia).
