Christians in Muslim countries

Christians in Muslim countries are often especially vulnerable to arrest, torture or worse, simply because of their faith. Converts from Islam are particularly at risk of accusations of apostasy (leaving a religion: in this case, Islam), which in some countries carries the death penalty.

The second half of 2013 saw an increase in attacks against Muslims and Christians by radical Buddhist groups. Over Christmas, church services were disrupted and Christians were accused of meeting illegally, and religious leaders of both Muslim and Christian communities faced threats and harassment. Much of the violence is also linked with the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), or Buddhist Force, an extremist group established in July 2012. The wider population is also continuing to struggle with the after effects of the decades-long civil war which ended in 2009.

Countless terrorist attacks in Nigerias central and northern states, often on largely Christian areas, have resulted in a situation where Christians live in almost daily fear of violence.

Jesus’ suffering

In the run up to Easter we are surrounded by symbols of new beginnings, representing Jesus’ resurrection from the grave. But before he was raised to life, he suffered terribly and died in agony. During Holy Week, please pray for Christians and others across the world who endure harassment, violence and worse, just because of what they believe.

Since Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991, its government has grown increasingly ruthless. In May 2002 the government of Eritrea banned all Christian denominations except Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Lutheran, and ended all other religious practices apart from Sunni Islam. Approximately 3,000 Christians are imprisoned for their faith.

Operation 18

Burma is a nation in transition. After decades of brutal military rule, when religious and ethnic minorities were severely persecuted, there are finally some signs of change. However, grave challenges still lie ahead despite some positive developments. Burma has always been a multi-ethnic and multireligious nation, and now, serious racial and religious tensions and conflict have come to the fore.

In the next couple of weeks, the UN Commission of Inquiry into the widespread human rights violations in North Korea will be producing their report, following a year of investigation. CSW campaigned for this inquiry for years, and testified to the Commission based on our own research into North Korea. But North Korea needs our prayers now more than ever.
