The Ladies in White are a peaceful protest movement comprising the female relatives of jailed prisoners of conscience in Cuba. Since 2003 members of the movement, who are mostly Roman Catholic, have met to pray, attend Sunday Mass and march peacefully in silent protest of the continued unjust incarceration of their loved ones. Each week, members of the group are threatened, fined or violently detained to prevent them from attending religious services; they are often held without charge in poor conditions.

Our report on Cuba published earlier this year highlighted the continuing injustice Cubans such as the Ladies in White face for exercising their beliefs. The levels of repression have increased following nationwide peaceful protests in July 2021.

Sunday 1 May

On 28 December 2021, María Josefa Acon Sardiña and Micaela Roll Gibert were arrested by agents of the National Revolutionary Police while leaving a Ladies in White prayer meeting. They were taken to a police unit, interrogated, threatened and released several hours later. Such arrests are a regular occurrence. Please pray peace and protection over the Ladies in White as they continue to be targeted.

Monday 2 May

Berta de Los Ángeles Soler Fernández is the leader of the Ladies in White, and one of the women most routinely, violently and systematically targeted by state authorities. Ask God to provide Berta with strength and resilience. Pray that she would remain secure in the love of God that surpasses knowledge.

Tuesday 3 May

The Ladies in White continue to pray and peacefully protest for the release of their loved ones who have been unjustly incarcerated by the Cuban government. Please pray for the quick and unconditional release of all those in Cuba detained for reasons of conscience.

Wednesday 4 May

Reverend Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo has been unjustly detained since he participated in nationwide peaceful protests on 11 July 2021. He was sentenced to eight years in prison after his trial in December, yet neither Pastor Lorenzo nor his wife learnt of the decision until over three months later. Ask God that Pastor Lorenzo would be swiftly released and returned to his family.

Thursday 5 May

Praise God for the courage of the religious groups, including Roman Catholic organisations and Protestant denominations which have publicly condemned the government’s use of increasingly repressive tactics, despite receiving threats. Pray that God would frustrate the plans and soften the hearts of those in power in Cuba.

Friday 6 May

‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’ (Romans 15:13). Pray this verse over Christians in Cuba today, that God would fill them with joy, peace and hope as they trust in Him.

Saturday 7 May

Father God, today we pray for Cuba. We lift up to you the Ladies in White, Pastor Lorenzo and all those persecuted for their faith. We cry out to you for transformation. Would your peace and justice reign today, we pray. Amen.
