Thank you so much for your prayers for Nigeria last November for the International Day of Prayer and Red Wednesday. So many of you joined us in a month of prayer and solidarity for the persecuted Church in Nigeria, and we’re incredibly grateful for your support!

Our partner organisation, CSW-Nigeria, has had a very busy year, including some great news for Rev Yunusa Nmadu, who runs it. He was recently elected General Secretary of the Evangelical Church Winning All denomination, one of the largest denominations in northern Nigeria. Please pray for Rev Yunusa as he takes on this exciting but very demanding new role!

Scores died in a series of militia attacks in Adamawa State last year, in which at least five villages were burnt down. However, when the air force was called in on 5 December to prevent the militia from entering the main town, Numan, the force bombed fleeing villagers, killing around 50. Pray for peace with justice.

In 2017 journalist Luka Binniyat spent 96 days in custody due to deliberately stringent bail conditions, imposed after he had written an incorrect story about a Fulani militia attack. His case highlights growing restrictions on press freedom in Kaduna State, where journalists deemed critical of the government are threatened and attacked, and Christian journalists face detention on excessive charges. Pray for the state government to respect press freedom and to end its harassment of Christian journalists.

Thank you so much to everyone who signed our Stand With Nigeria petition protesting religiously-motivated violence. We handed in the petition to Lord Ahmad, Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the United Nations at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 11 December. Please pray that this would result in strong UK government intervention on behalf of vulnerable villagers in central Nigeria.

“We remembered what you taught us…” This was what one church leader told us after bulldozers threatened seven buildings in their neighbourhood. They remembered a CSW training course they’d taken ten years earlier and made such a noise on social media that the demolition campaign was halted after only two churches had been destroyed. Join us in giving thanks for this success today!

Pastor Gideon runs Nehemiah Camp, a place for people displaced by militia attacks in southern Kaduna. They are often in desperate need of resources, including food: the state government gives them no assistance. He worries particularly for the children under five. Pray for provision, and for wisdom for Pastor Gideon as he continues to care for those who have lost so much.

Loving heavenly Father, thank you that we can come to you in prayer and lift situations like that in Nigeria to you in full confidence of your power and love. We pray that you will protect Christians and other religious minorities from attack, and bring the perpetrators of violence to justice. Amen.
