Please continue to pray for Nigeria this week following Nigerian Independence Day on 1 October.

Fourteen-year-old Ese Oruru was returned to her family earlier this year after seven months away from her family. She was allegedly abducted in August 2015, and her release followed a huge social media campaign. She recently gave birth. Thank God for Ese’s release, and pray she will be able to resume her life without suffering stigma.

This year also saw the release of Patience Paul, who, like Ese, was abducted in 2015. While we are thankful for the return of Patience and Ese, many more girls are still being held. Please remember them in your prayers today, and pray that we will hear more stories like Patience’s and Ese’s soon.

Today, let’s continue to pray against the rising violence of Fulani herders, who were deemed the fourth deadliest terror group in the world last year. Their death toll this year surpasses Boko Haram’s and they are increasingly killing looting and raping in the south of the country. We ask that God would stop their campaigns of terror in their tracks.

Our conference this year was blessed by the attendance of Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi as our keynote speaker. He is the Anglican Archbishop of Jos in Nigeria, and as a result of his advocacy for justice and religious freedom, has been the target of attacks and death threats. We’re praying for protection and strength for Archbishop Ben, his family and staff today.

Last year, Mariam Job told CSW Nigeria the story of her husband: “My husband was running to come home: he was stopped and asked if he was a Christian or a Muslim. He told them that he was a Christian. He couldn’t deny his God. They shot and killed him.” Pray for Mariam and others like her today as they continue to rebuild their lives without their husbands.

The NGO Doctors Without Borders estimates 1200 children may have died of starvation in internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps in Borno State, with nearly 200 people dying between 23 May and 22 June, predominantly from malnutrition and diarrhea. Pray for healing, assistance and provision for displaced people in Nigeria today, and that one day, they’d be able to return home and rebuild their lives.

Dear God, we pray for a brighter future for all Nigerians, one that is free of violence, fear, lack and hostility. Hear us from heaven and heal the land. Amen.
