eritrea protest vigil 2016
On Thursday 19 May we joined Human Rights Concern Eritrea, Release Eritrea,
the Evangelical Alliance, Church in Chains and the British Orthodox Church to
protest the continuing repression in Eritrea. The day marked 14 years since the
closure of most of Eritrea’s Protestant churches, and the start of severe restrictions
on the Christian community.
Over 30 people joined the protest outside the Eritrean Embassy in London. Various speakers outlined some of the injustices currently occurring in Eritrea, reminding the protestors that “All rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been violated in every possible way,” and that although Eritrea is small, it is one of the largest refugee-generating countries in the world.
The protest culminated in an attempt to deliver a letter to the Eritrean embassy criticising the country’s repressive attitude to human rights; however, embassy staff refused to open the door.
