Prayer Diary: Sudan

9 Oct 2016

Over 97% of the people living in Sudan are Muslim, and Sudanese Christians often face open persecution. Both blasphemy and apostasy (leaving a religion: in this case, Islam) are illegal, and the latter can carry the death penalty.

  • Sunday 9 October

The cities of Khartoum and Omdurman have been the scene of a series of arrests of clergymen and church members as part of a government policy of repression characterised by harassment, intimidation, imprisonment and seizure or destruction of places of worship.  Join us in praying that God would touch the hearts of the Sudanese government and bring about a powerful change in the country.

  • Monday 10 October

Church leaders have been arrested and forced to report with the security services every day. The parish work in some parts of Omdurman and Khartoum has been completely interrupted. Church leaders are hoping the harassment will come to an end and trusting God to guide them through these difficult times..

  • Tuesday 11 October

In addition to widespread government repression Christians in Sudan experience discrimination every day. From seeking employment to finding adequate housing Christians, especially those with darker skin, like the Nuba have their options restricted because of their religious beliefs and for some their ethnicity too. Pray for a Sudan where all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or religion can live in freedom with equal access to opportunities.

  • Wednesday 12 October

Many Sudanese congregations have faced the threat of the demolition of their church in the last year. Pray for those congregations who have nowhere to worship this Sunday, and for safety for churches that are under threat of demolition.

  • Thursday 13 October

Since 2013 the Sudan Evangelical Presbyterian Church had its affairs taken over by an illegal committee, backed by the government, which has sold some of the church’s buildings. In August 2015 the courts decided the correct committee should be authorized to administrate for the church. Sadly the government has ignored the decision and continues to support the illegal committee. Pray that God would ensure justice and restoration for this church.

  • Friday 14 October

Talahon Nigosi Kassa Ratta is a Christian activist who was released from prison in May this year. He was arrested in December 2015 and held without charge, for most of his imprisonment, he wasn’t allowed contact with his family or his lawyers. We’re grateful for his released and pray that this is the first of many.

  • Saturday 15 October

Lord, we pray for Sudan today and for all the Christians who are in prison just because of their faith. Please keep them safe and let them feel your presence with them during their ordeal. We pray that it will end soon, that charges that have been levelled against them would be dropped, and they will be able to worship you freely and without fear. Amen.
