Prayer Diary: Eritrea

21 May 2017

Eritrea is one of the most repressive regimes in the world. Members of non-government-sanctioned religions experience extreme repression: theyre jailed and beaten in attempts to get them to renounce their faith.

  • Sunday 21 May

If you listened to our Lent podcast series, you know the story of Helen, an Eritrean gospel singer who suffered terrible hardship because of her faith. Sadly, her story isn’t unique: pray for the many Eritreans like Helen who are still suffering.

  • Monday 22 May

When they’re detained, many Eritreans are held in prison camps made of shipping containers: tin boxes that are often pitch black inside, sweltering in the daytime and freezing at night. Please pray for endurance and protection for these prisoners today.

  • Tuesday 23 May

Today, please pray for the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, as she investigates Eritrea and reports back to the UN. It’s by no means an easy job, so pray God would grant her wisdom, courage and energy!

  • Wednesday 24 May

Whenever I talk about Eritrea I’m reminded of Exodus 2:24-25 (ESV): ‘And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel – and God knew.’ Pray this verse over Eritrea on their Independence Day.

  • Thursday 25 May

Working on Eritrea is often very difficult: today, please pray for God to watch over our advocacy team who labour so tirelessly for this country.

  • Friday 26 May

One of the reasons it’s hard to pray for Eritrea sometimes is precisely because it’s so repressive: the repression means that not a lot of information gets through. Today, take a moment to pray for ordinary Eritreans. Though we don’t know what they’re going through, God knows their struggles and cares for them.

  • Saturday 27 May

Lord, today we pray for Eritrea and its people. Move powerfully in that country, God: spread your peace and justice there we pray. Watch over our advocates as they work and bring about real, lasting change for Eritreans. Amen.
