Over 97% of the people living in Sudan are Muslim, and Sudanese Christians often face open persecution. Both blasphemy and apostasy (leaving a religion: in this case, Islam) are illegal, and the latter can carry the death penalty.

This week Nigeria marks Independence Day on 1 October. As the nation celebrates 56 years of independence, it faces an immense humanitarian crisis. According to the UN, at least 17,000 people have died in terrorist-related violence since 2009, and 2.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes.

Over 40 people have been killed the last two years in Bangladesh some were targeted based on their religious identity and others were secular voices speaking out against religious extremism in the country. This wave of shocking violence has created feelings of instability in the country and adds to an already difficult and complex situation. Religion is connected to national identity, so people who belong to minority faiths- Christians, Shia Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims, and Hindus- are often a target for violence, discrimination and harassment.

Burmas one million Rohingya Muslims are among the most persecuted people in the world. The Burmese government does not recognise them as citizens, meaning that they have very few rights. In Kachin state, Christians suffer terrible human rights abuses, forcing them to leave their homes and become internal refugees.
